What is a rose?

I know it would smell as sweet by any other name, but I’m wondering what kind of symbolism, if any, has worked its way into your psyche?

What does a red rose symbolize to you?

  • It’s a symbol of love, beauty, and romance, and an ingredient in love potions.
  • It’s kind of generic.  It can mean anything.
  • It’s a symbol of purity.
  • It’s a flower.
  • It’s a symbol of the Virgin Mary and of Christian martyrs.
  • It’s a symbol of the goddesses Isis and Aprhrodite (Venus).
  • It’s been overused as a symbol.
  • It’s been used so much because it brings with it layers of meaning that speak to many people.
  • It’s a symbol of womanhood.
  • It’s pretty!
  • It’s a girl thing.
  • It’s a guy thing.
  • It’s a symbol of keeping secrets, “sub rosa.”
  • A red rose held in the hand is a symbol of socialism or social democracy, and many labor parties.

Great party, great cleanup, crud

That about sums up the last four days. We had a great 90th birthday party for Mom. She loved her sweatshirts and is wearing one of them every time she goes out. The cake was awesome and the company stayed late and we had lots of fun.

I came down with the crud Sunday evening (fortunately after cleaning up from the party) and have been sleeping quite a lot. I feel more like a human being than I have in days, so hopefully that will continue. I’m going to take the rest of the day easy.

Back to our regularly scheduled programming tomorrow. I hope.

I’m staying because LJ is home and also because of what this insightful post says, and because of what the BBC says.

ETA: asakiyume pointed me to this article from Time magazine on the hacker attacks.

I hate bullies. I hate bullies with a political ax to grind who want to limit free speech.

So I’m staying, dammit.

Having said that, I am backing everything up to Dreamwidth and my website blog. Never a bad thing to protect years worth of content.
