evil

Random quote of the day:

“Evil people are not dumb.  They simply use the power of their mind to cut off their conscience.”

—General Romeo Dallaire, quoted by Scott Simon, “Evil in Mumbai,” National Public Radio, Nov. 29, 2008

Random quote of the day:

“The belief in a supernatural source of evil is not necessary; men alone are quite capable of every wickedness.”

Random quote of the day:

“Boredom is the root of all evil—the despairing refusal to be oneself.”

—Søren Kierkegaard, Either/Or

I couldn’t really verify this quote. It’s widely propagated on the interdweebs and is probably a corruption or an alternate translation of something that appeared in the essay “Crop Rotation” (or, alternately translated, “Rotation of Crops”) in Kierkegaard’s book, Either/Or. I think this one is pithier than the quote I could verify: “Boredom is the root of evil; it is that which must be held off.” I can never resist a good pith, so I decided to use the one above.

(Thanks to handworn for calling my attention to this quote.)

Random quote of the day:

“There is no reason why good cannot triumph as often as evil.  The triumph of anything is a matter of organization.  If there are such things as angels, I hope that they are organized along the lines of the Mafia.”

—Kurt Vonnegut, The Sirens of Titan
